Did you know that God commands us to have godly cisterns? A cistern is a tank for storing water. Why is that important you ask? The water respresents God; it is the living water. God wants us to store up the living water that we may have life. If we have broken cisterns we cannot hold life. Jeremiah 2:13 reads, “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. We have to have living water to get eternal life. The living water is everything that God directs us to do pertaining to life; all of His commands. If we have broken cisterns we are disregarding everything that God is telling us. It is going in one ear and out the other. Satan comes and takes away The Word that was sewn in us; more importantly, Jesus and the Spirt are both described as being living water. These are the two most important gifts that God grants us besides Himself. When living water is stored, you keep The Word of God; you live and walk in His ways. The water is always there for you to draw upon in time of need; it is a source. It is pointless for God to tell people with broken cisterns anything as they refuse to follow His words. When a cistern is broken, it will eventually become empty. God wants us to be full of The Holy Spirit. That is his promise and down payment to us regarding eternal life. People with broken cisterns experience the judgement of God. They depart from His ways. When we have godly cisterns, we hear from God because he knows that we will listen. What kind of cistern are you hewing? Make Sure it holds living water.
